Tornadoes cause significant damage in Matador, Texas



    A tornado struck Matador, Texas on Tuesday, June 21, 2023, causing significant damage to the community. The tornado was given an EF-3 rating on the advanced Fujita scale, with winds of 165 mph.

The tornado first touched down near the intersection of Highway 84 and FM 1724, and then moved northeast through downtown. This caused extensive damage to homes, businesses and vehicles. Several people were injured, but no casualties were reported.

As of the morning of Wednesday, June 22, 2023, rescue efforts are ongoing at Matador. The Red Cross has opened shelters for those displaced by the tornado.

The National Weather Service is warning residents in the area to be cautious of further storms and tornadoes.

  • Take shelter in a basement or interior room on the lowest level of your home.
  • If you are in a mobile home, get out and move to a sturdy building.
  • If you are in a car, pull over to the side of the road and exit the vehicle. Lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area.
